FOR THE GIRLS

These are the faces of the sweet tween girls that my friends from the Women Like Us Foundation have been mentoring this past school year at Castro Middle in Los Angeles. This remarkable program has been led by the tireless Angela Palmieri, with the relentless dedication and help of Xochitl, Erica, Karla, Juliet, Angelica, Jackie, Tanya and company (amazingly, there are too many to mention).

Our organization is relatively new and small, but in the last year we’ve taken some very impressionable bright young women, and if what they tell me is true, made a huge impact. One girl in particular said to me this last Friday: “Because of this program, I get up every morning and after my shower, scribble into the fog on the mirror - You Are Beautiful.

We’ve been lifting them up and supporting them in areas of academics, culture, arts, community, and most recently on BEAUTY.

A number of my friends volunteered their time (Melissa, Ashlee, Catalina, YVonne, Lisa, Sasha - THANK YOU) to give these girls who would otherwise not have it - some true Hollywood-style pampering. They were given mini makeovers complete with tips on how to care and style their hair and apply the slightest bits of makeup to enchance their already gorgeous faces! (They’re only 12 and 13 but they have PROM coming up!)

Of course we followed up the glitz and glam with a group discussion on what TRUE BEAUTY means. “Pretty is as Pretty does…” We encouraged them to stay clear of ugly behavior and to continue to discover their strengths, talents, and passions; for each of them are in fact uniquely beautiful.

To all who have reached out to help US help THEM, my sincerest thanks. In the years to come we hope to grow this mentoring program in to more schools in the LAUSD and beyond. But to do that, we need your help! We need bodies. We need brains. We need FUNDS.

I thank you.

The girls thank you.
